How to Start Exercising: Cross Training Fads May Need To Be Renamed Cross Failure! (Part 2)

How to Start ExercisingIn part 1 of this blog post I introduced a very simple equation:

How to start exercising = NOT intense cross training

I visited a local cross training studio where several of my patients had sustained injuries.  I was pleasantly greeted by an attractive woman who offered to help answer any questions I had.  It wasn't long that I noticed a huge scar on the inside of her elbow.  I asked her what happened and she said she, "...blew out her elbow in an intense cross training routine and needed it surgically repaired."  She then asked If I wanted a tour, but I told her,  "No thanks, I've seen enough!"  It was the blind leading the blind.  It's actually sad that people looking to learn how to start exercising may end up there.

There is a reason that airplanes don't have "fender benders".  When anything on planet earth is taken to an extreme, like moving 500 mph. at 30,000 feet, or exercising with intense and extreme movements, the results are likely to be either amazing and spectacular, or horrifying and destructive.

If you're interested in how to start exercising, consider this, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  This is Newtons third Law. This is science, but it's also wisdom.  Exercise is as much a sport as eating or driving a car.  Food nourishes the body and cars are designed to get you from point A to point B, and that's it.  Anything else beyond that is purely for mental satisfaction and the human desire for MORE!  The reality is that exercise is no different.  It's purpose is to improve the health of your heart, joints, and muscles, not to put your body through grueling, intense routines.  How to start exercising = Not starting with intense cross training.

Posted on June 03 2013 in Beginners Exercise Program

Beginners Exercise Program: Walking isn't Exercise!I can't tell you how many people looking for a beginners exercise program tell me they walk for exercise.  My first question to these folks is, "What is your fitness or exercise goal?"  The answer is usually, "To get in shape." or "To lose weight."  My second question is always, "Then what does your heart rate get to when you walk?" and without fail they all say, "I don't know." Really?

If you want to lose weight, get in shape, or improve your cardiovascular health, how can you do that if you don't know how hard your body is working?  Look, whether you're a veteran in fitness or just starting a beginners exercise program, walking isn't really exercise unless it's done at a pace that gets your heart pumping into your target heart rate range! Yeah, it's good to walk, but if you're serious about your fitness goal, and walking is going to be one of your exercise choices, you need to understand  the truth.
